Two-Car Accident on Highway 154 in Santa Barbara Kills 1 and Injures 5

 
SANTA BARBARA, CA (August 22, 2023) – A man died and Maria Estella Suarez Jimenez was among five people who were injured in a two-car accident in Santa Barbara early Saturday morning.
 
The fatal accident happened just before 1:30 a.m. on August 19, near San Antonio Creek Road. According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, a 2016 Infiniti QX60 was traveling eastbound on the highway at approximately 55 mph. At the same time, a 2020 Nissan Altima was traveling westbound approaching the Infiniti at an undetermined speed.
 
The driver of the Nissan allowed the car to travel across the double yellow lines and into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of the Infiniti. The two cars then collided within the eastbound lane.
 
As a result, the driver and sole occupant of the Nissan died at the scene. He was a 22-year-old resident of South Jacksonville, Florida.
 
Jimenez, a 57-year-old Oxnard resident, was the driver of the Infiniti. She suffered major injuries. Her four passengers, 69-year-old Rosa Marie Suarez, 61-year-old Ofelia Vargas Suarez, 75-year-old Maria Suarez Garibay and 53-year-old Jaime Jimenez Suarez, also suffered moderate to major injuries. All were also Oxnard residents.

All five patients were taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

At this time, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs was a factor in the crash. The CHP is still investigating the exact cause.
