Man Killed, Jose Del Valle Arrested in Hit-and-Run Crash on 5 Freeway [Castella, CA]

Van Crashes into Trees on 5 Freeway in Castella Killing 1 Passenger and Injuring 17 Others, Driver Flees Scene

 
CASTELLA, CA (March 25, 2025) – A man died and 17 other people were injured in a hit-and-run crash on 5 Freeway in Castella Friday morning on March 22.
 
The fatal crash happened around 5:20 a.m. near Crag View Drive. According to the California Highway Patrol, 41-year-old Jose Sanchez Del Valle of Tijuana was driving a Volkswagen Crafter van carrying 17 passengers.
 
Del Valle was heading northbound when he made an unsafe turning movement to the right. He then ran off the east side of the road and crashed into several trees.
 
After the crash, Del Valle fled the scene.
 
All 17 passengers sustained injuries and none of them were wearing seat belts.
 
One of the passengers died from his injuries. Authorities only identified him as a 37-year-old man from Saucilla, Chihuahua, Mexico.
 
Meanwhile, Del Valle suffered major injuries. Officers later found him three hours later about a mile away in a rural area. They arrested him on a series of charges including hit-and-un and vehicular manslaughter.
 
Alcohol or drugs did not play a role in the crash. An investigation is underway.
