DUI Driver Causes Deadly Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 1 at Highway 68
MONTEREY COUNTY, CA (May 8, 2023) – A man died and Chris Witherspoon was arrested after a DUI wrong-way crash on Highway 1 in Monterey County early Saturday morning.
The fatal crash happened around 3:45 a.m. on May 5, at the intersection with Highway 68. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 25-year-old suspect of Hope Mills, North Carolina, was driving a Toyota Camry northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 1. He then crashed into the front of a Mitsubishi, driven by the 69-year-old victim from Seaside.
As a result, the man driving the Mitsubishi died at the scene.
Witherspoon was determined to have been driving under the influence at the time of the crash. Police arrested him and booked him into the Monterey County Jail.
An investigation into this fatality is underway.
