Wrong-Way Crash on 8 Freeway in El Cajon Kills Driver and Leaves 17-Month-Old Child with Major Injuries

 
EL CAJON, CA (January 30, 2024) – A man died and a 17-month-old child was seriously injured in a wrong-way crash on 8 Freeway in El Cajon Sunday evening on January 28.
 
The fatal crash happened around 7:40 p.m. just west of Second Street. According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound in the westbound lanes of the freeway. He then made an unsafe turn to the right, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and crash into a concrete guardrail wall.
 
The impact of the crash sent chunks of concrete debris toward several vehicles traveling north and south on Second Street underneath the freeway. The debris strikes caused the 17-month-old child seated in one of the vehicles.
 
Paramedics rushed the child to Rady Children’s Hospital for treatment of major, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, the Chevrolet burst into flames and the driver was killed.

It is unknown if drugs or alcohol was a factor. Further investigation is underway.
