Head-On Accident on Highway 178 in Bakersfield Kills Man and Injures Barbara Chrisman

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (October 14, 2021) – A man died and Barbara Chrisman suffered injuries in a head-on accident on Highway 178 late Tuesday afternoon.
 
The accident happened around 5:15 p.m. on October 12, at the top of the Kern River Canyon just west of Upper Ridgebar. According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was driving westbound when he drifted into the shoulder and struck a raised asphalt curb. He then crossed the double yellow lines and collided into a 2020 Ford Explorer head-on, driven by Chrisman.
 
As a result, the man suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Authorities withheld his identity pending family notification. He was not wearing his seat belt, according to reports.
 
Chrisman, a 68-year-old Wofford Heights resident, had moderate injuries.
 
The crash is under investigation. The CHP said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
