Man Reportedly Jumps into Path of Pickup Truck on Highway 273 near Metz Road

 
REDDING, CA (January 22, 2023) – A man died in a pedestrian accident on Highway 273, late Saturday evening.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened on January 21, shortly before 11:00 p.m. For reasons still under investigation, the man reportedly jumped in front of a pickup truck on southbound Highway 273.
 
The driver, identified as 66-year-old Clarence Odell of Redding, applied the brakes in an attempt to avoid hitting the man. However, the vehicle hit the pedestrian near Metz Road.
 
Emergency crews pronounced the man dead at the scene. Authorities withheld the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin.
 
Meanwhile, Odell remained and cooperated with investigators.
 
CHP continues to investigate the cause of the fatal incident. Officers will release additional information once it becomes available.
