Lt. Col. Billy Sullivan Dies in Plane Accident at Porterville Municipal Airport near Road 232
PORTERVILLE, CA (June 10, 2021) — Lt. Col. Billy ‘Taz’ Sullivan died in a plane crash at Porterville Municipal Airport near Road 232 Monday afternoon.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the fatal accident happened around 2:20 p.m. just shortly after takeoff. For unknown reasons, the RV-6A — a single-engine home-built airplane — reportedly nose-dived into a field near the runway just after takeoff. As a result, the two-seater aircraft exploded on impact and left behind a large plume of smoke in the air.
Unfortunately, Sullivan – believed to be the sole occupant of the private aircraft – died in the accident.
At this time, the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board have not confirmed the cause of the crash. However, they have determined that the pilot tried to return to the airport when the accident occurred.
If anyone has more information, please contact the authorities.
Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Lt. Col. Billy “Taz” Sullivan.
