MODESTO, CA (February 8, 2022) — Two passengers died in a hit-and-run accident on Highway 132 near Gates Road on Sunday.
 
The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office has identified the two victims as 23-year-old Jovany Serrano-Caballero from Hayward and a 36-year-old Saul Garcia from San Jose.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal single-car accident happened around 2:30 a.m. For unknown reasons, a 2011 GMC traveling westbound on Highway 132 went off the north edge of the road. Subsequently, the vehicle struck several trees just east of the San Joaquin River before it came to a rest.
 
Both Serrano-Caballero and Garcia died at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol. In addition, reports indicate that neither wore a seat belt at the time of the accident.
 
According to a witness, the passing motorist believes a man in his 20s wearing a dark hoodie left the pickup truck. After that, it is possible the driver got a ride with a passing motorist, according to the CHP.
