Coroner Identifies 86-Year-Old Man Killed in Lafayette Bicycle Crash

LAFAYETTE, CA (April 17, 2021) – An 86-year-old man who died in a bicycle accident in Lafayette Tuesday morning has been identified.

He was Joe Shami, according to the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office.

Police said an SUV hit Shami while he was in the roundabout intersection at Pleasant Hill Road and Olympic Boulevard just after 6:45 a.m. on April 13.

An off-duty nurse who was passing by the scene provided care until paramedics could arrive, and an ambulance took Shami to a hospital.

Despite life-saving efforts, Shami was declared dead.

Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Police did not make any arrests, but the crash is still under investigation.

On a social media page for a cycling group, Shami was called “The Legend of Mount Diablo.” In 2018, Shami reached a milestone of riding up the mountain at least once a week for 500 consecutive weeks.
