Jeanette Ward Runs Across Highway 99 and Fatally Struck by DUI Driver

 
FRESNO, CA (August 2, 2021)Jeanette Ward died in a pedestrian DUI accident on Highway 99 in Fresno early Saturday morning.
 
The fatal accident happened just after 1:25 a.m. on July 31, near Clinton Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 31-year-old Fresno woman was running across the busy highway when a 2018 Ford Explorer, driven by 33-year-old Valerie Covarrubias of Madera, struck her.
 
The impact caused Ward severe injuries. First responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
 
Covarrubias remained on scene and was found to be driving under the influence. Police arrested her on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI, but officers determined that alcohol was not the cause of the fatal crash.
 
At this time, officers are still trying to figure out why Ward ran out onto the highway. Further investigation is underway.
