Head-On Crash on Avenue 7 in Madera County Kills 8 People

 
MADERA COUNTY, CA (February 25, 2024) – Hector Orozco, Alfredo Morales Sanchez, Juvenal Jacobo Talvera and Robert Jerry Kovar were among eight people who died in a head-on accident in Madera County.
 
The fatal crash happened Monday morning around 6:30 a.m. on Avenue 7, just west of Road 22. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Chevrolet Silverado pickup crossed over and collided head-on with a GMC Safari van.
 
The van had eight men inside, who were heading to work in the Firebaugh area. The pickup had one person inside.
 
Seven of the eight men in the van and the driver of the pickup died in the crash.
 
One man in the van was transported to a local hospital in an unknown condition.
 
Authorities identified Orozco, Sanchez, Talvera and Kovar as four of the eight fatal victims. Hector was 33 years old and Sanchez was 30 years old from Guerrero, Mexico.

Kovar was 78 years old from Auberry. He was the driver of the pickup truck.

Loved ones identified Benito Perez Mundo as the sole survivor of the crash.

CHP officials said the wife of one of the victims in the van was following in another van immediately behind and witnessed the crash.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing.
