Gene Benton Jr. Fatally Struck by Car on Highway 12 near 5 Freeway

 
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, CA (November 27, 2023) — Gene Denton Jr. was hit and killed in a bicycle accident on Highway 12 near the 5 Freeway.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol Stockton division, the fatal bicycle accident happened around 5:00 p.m. Thursday. For an unknown reason, the unhoused Gene Benton Jr. rode his bike over the eastbound lane into the westbound lane and into the path of an oncoming Volkswagen Beetle. Subsequently, the 19-year-old driver, who was unable to apply the brakes in time, struck the right side of the bicycle, hurling Benton onto the road.
 
Moments after, paramedics responded to the scene, but Benton passed away from his injuries.
 
Following the crash, CHP investigators were examining if drug use played a factor in the crash. However, more on this will be determined by an investigation.
