Orphan Loses One Leg and May Lose the Other after Struck by Drunk Driver in Santa Monica

 
SANTA MONICA, CA (June 16, 2023)Gelvy Ortiz lost his leg after being hit by an alleged drunk driver in Santa Monica on June 2.
 
According to the Santa Monica Police Department, the 18-year-old victim was sitting at a bus stop on Wilshire Boulevard at 26th Street when a suspected DUI driver jumped the curb and struck him.
 
As a result, Ortiz suffered serious injuries. He was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, where doctors were forced to amputate his left leg. Doctors said his other leg will require several surgeries before he can fully recover.
 
Ortiz is the youngest of four orphaned siblings.
 
GoFundMe campaign was created to help the family with mounting medical bills and expenses.
 
The driver, 35-year-old John Edward Alevizos, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He posted bail shortly after.
 
An investigation into this crash is underway.
