Wrong-Way Drunk Driver Causes Deadly Crash on 805 Freeway in Nestor Neighborhood

 
NESTOR, CA (July 27, 2023) – Fernando Goneortiz was arrested in a fatal DUI crash in the Nestor neighborhood of San Diego Wednesday on July 26.
 
According to the CHP, the 29-year-old suspect from San Diego was driving a white Audi sedan northbound in southbound lanes of 805 Freeway near the San Ysidro Port of Entry, allegedly trying to avoid Mexico. He then struck a blue Honda minivan, driven by a Hispanic man.
 
The impact caused the minivan driver fatal injuries and died at the scene. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office withheld the victim’s identity at this time.
 
Goneortiz sustained major non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. He was initially taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

When he is cleared medically, he will be booked into San Diego Central Jail for DUI causing injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving the wrong way causing injury or death.
