Eric Cavaness Killed in Traffic Accident on 5 Freeway [Del Mar, CA]

39-Year-Old Man Dies Last Month after Crashing into Tractor Trailer in Del Mar

 
DEL MAR, CA (February 5, 2024) – Eric John Cavaness was killed in a traffic accident in Del Mar on January 25.
 
The fatal accident happened around 4:15 a.m. on 5 Freeway near Del Mar Heights Road. According to the CHP, Cavaness was driving a pickup truck southbound when he rear-ended a southbound Kenworth tractor trailer. The pickup truck then became wedge underneath the big rig.
 
Responding firefighters pulled Cavaness out of the pickup.
 
Despite life-saving efforts, Cavaness died at the scene. He was a 39-year-old Mission Viejo resident, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office.
 
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
