Smuggling Boat Capsizes off Black’s Beach in San Diego Killing 8 People

SAN DIEGO, CA (March 13, 2023) – Eight people were killed in a boat accident at Black’s Beach late Saturday on March 11.

According to the US Coast Guard, two migrant smuggling boats approached a San Diego beach amid heavy fog and one capsized in the surf. The boat that overturned was carrying 15 people.

A woman on one of the panga-style boats called 911.

Coast Guard and San Diego Fire-Rescue crews pulled eight bodies from the water, but thick fog hampered the search for additional victims.

A Coast Guard officer confirmed eight people died and teams were searching for at least seven more. All eight victims were adults.

It is unknown if anyone on the second boat was injured or whether they were apprehended by Border Patrol.

Authorities turned over the victims to the San Diego County medical examiner’s office to be identified. An investigation is underway.

We express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims.
