NATIONAL CITY, CA (May 15, 2023) – A driver who led police on a chase died in a crash on National City Boulevard early Friday morning on May 12.

Just after 12:00 a.m., an officer was traveling southbound when a vehicle passed him at a high rate of speed. When the officer tried to stop the car, the driver refused to stop and sped away.

With the officer in pursuit, the driver continued south before losing control of the vehicle in the 2800 block of National City Boulevard near 28th Street.

The car hit some poles and parked vehicles at a Mazda auto dealership. It then spun out in the center divide, causing the driver to be ejected onto the roadway.

Responding paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the unidentified driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The National City Police Department is handling the investigation.
