Cesar Romero Killed in Watsonville Head-On Crash on Highway 129

 
WATSONVILLE, CA (November 30, 2021) — A man died in a head-on accident on Highway 129 at Highway 1 on Saturday, November 20.
 
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 20-year-old Cesar Romero of Salinas.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the deadly two-car crash happened around 2:00 p.m. Romero drove a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier west on the overcrossing while a 27-year-old Hollister man in a 2004 Ford Freestar drove east.
 
According to the CHP, Romero’s Chevrolet drifted over the overpass’ double-yellow dividing lines. As a result, it began moving west in the eastbound lane of the freeway.
 
The Ford driver attempted to avoid colliding with the Chevrolet, but Romero turned to the right – also trying to avoid the crash. Both vehicles subsequently collided as they both moved toward the westbound lane of the highway.
 
Romero died shortly after the accident.
 
The two men in the Ford – including a 19-year-old Hollister man in the passenger seat – were treated for moderate injuries at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas.
 
The CHP is still investigating the collision and has not determined whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.
