Accident on Maine Avenue in Lakeside Leaves Bicyclist Impaled on Truck Roof Rack

LAKESIDE, CA (March 12, 2021) – A bicyclist suffered severe injuries Tuesday morning after an accident on Maine Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the 53-year-old bicyclist was riding to the north outside a convenience store in the 10100 block of Maine Avenue when he collided with the westbound work vehicle just before 8:30 a.m. on March 9.

A hook on the front of a cargo rack extending over the cab of the truck pierced the underside of the bicyclist’s jaw and cut through his right cheek above the initial entry point. It left the man hung up on the metal peg.

Emergency personnel held off on trying to remove the victim from the hook for about 20 minutes. Firefighters then lifted the man up, freeing him.

Paramedics took the man to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego for treatment of his severe injuries. The victim had been conscious, alert and on his feet throughout the excruciating ordeal.

Further investigation is underway.
