Andrew Phillips Arrested, Highway Worker Dead in DUI Accident on Highway 28 near Sahara Drive

CARNELIAN BAY, CA (September 28, 2022) — Officials arrested 36-year-old Andrew Phillips of Tahoma after a fatal DUI crash on Monday.

According to California Highway Patrol’s Truckee Office, the accident took place on Highway 28 near Sahara Drive on September 26.

CHP said that at around 10:44 p.m. Phillips drove his 2021 Subaru Forester westbound on Highway 28. Then he hit the 56-year-old highway worker, who directed traffic from the westbound lane to the eastbound lane.

Phillips’ level of intoxication prevented him from slowing down or avoiding the highway worker. It caused Phillips to strike him. Afterward, he continued westbound into the construction zone, where he crashed into a dump truck and an excavator.

The dump truck was driven by 65-year-old Kristopher Jones of Willows and the excavator was being operated by 30-year-old Derek McVey of Sparks, Nevada. Both men did not sustain any injuries, CHP said.

At 11:10 p.m., North Lake Fire pronounced the 56-year-old male highway worker dead at the scene.

Officials arrested Phillips on suspicion of driving under the influence. They booked him in the Nevada County Sheriff’s Station in Truckee.
