Sheriff’s Recruit Suffers Grave Injuries after Hit by SUV near Mills Avenue and Telegraph Road

 
SOUTH WHITTIER, CA (November 27, 2022) – Alejandro Martinez was among three sheriff’s recruits that were critically injured after they were hit by an SUV in South Whittier.
 
The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16, in the 10600 block of Mills Avenue, near Telegraph Road. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a group of about 75 law enforcement recruits was running in columns northbound on the roadway when a southbound Honda SUV swerved to the opposite side of the road and plowed into the trainees.
 
Martinez suffered serious injuries and now in grave condition.
 
Three other cadets also remain hospitalized in critical condition. The rest of the more than two dozen injured cadets have been released from the hospital.
 
The injuries sustained included head trauma, broken bones, and loss of limb.

The crash initially appeared to be a tragic accident, noting that the motorist did not appear to be drunk. But further investigation determined that the driver appeared to run into the group on purpose.

The suspected driver, 22-year-old Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez of Diamond Bar, was arrested and had been in custody on $2 million bail on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer.
