Car Crashes into Van on 8 Freeway in Del Cerro Injuring 9 People

DEL CERRO, CA (October 6, 2022) – Nine people were injured in a two-vehicle accident on 8 Freeway in the Del Cerro area on Monday afternoon.

The accident happened shortly before 3:35 p.m. on October 3 just west of Lake Murray Boulevard. A blue Mazda was traveling westbound on the freeway when it struck a white Nissan van that was also heading west.

The van was carrying eight children ranging from infancy to late teens. The impact of the crash sent the van up an embankment. It then overturned and rolled back down onto the freeway.

One of the children was thrown from the vehicle. That patient was initially unconscious, but later regained consciousness.

San Diego Fire-Rescue Department reported that all children were taken to Rady Children’s Hospital, one of them was in serious condition.

The 38-year-old driver of the van was also hospitalized with minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the 47-year-old Phoenix man who was driving the Mazda was not injured.

Officers said the crash may have started with an unknown vehicle striking the Mazda, propelling it into the van. They also added that two cars may have been racing.

Further investigation is underway.
