Elderly Pedestrian Dies after Struck by Sedan on East Olive Avenue in Merced

 
MERCED, CA (May 4, 2023) – An 82-year-old man was killed in a pedestrian accident on East Olive Avenue in Merced Monday evening on May 1.
 
The fatal accident happened around 8:18 p.m. just east of McKee Road. According to the Merced Police Department, the man was leaving a friend’s house and walking across the roadway to his vehicle when a 2020 Toyota Camry struck him.
 
The man was rushed to a trauma center where he later succumbed to his injuries. He was not yet identified.
 
The driver of the Camry, a 38-year-old Merced woman, was driving under the posted speed limit and still accelerating at the time of the crash, police said. She remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. She was not injured.
 
A juvenile passenger in the Camry suffered minor injuries.
 
The crash occurred during dark conditions on a section of the roadway with minimal lighting.
 
Neither drugs, alcohol nor speed appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
