79-Year-Old Motorcyclist Dead in Traffic Crash on Highway 165 [Los Banos, CA]

Motorcycle Rider Killed in Traffic Accident on Highway 165 near Mervel Avenue

 
LOS BANOS, CA (November 29, 2022) — A motorcycle rider died in a traffic crash on Highway 165 on Wednesday, November 23.
 
According to California Highway Patrol, the incident happened on Highway 165, south of Mervel Avenue, at around 4:04 p.m.
 
An investigation determined a 79-year-old man from Santa Maria rode a 2019 Harley-Davidson motorcycle north on Highway 165.
 
At the same time, a 2017 Nissan Altima driven by 30-year-old Eliseo Mendez, of Merced, moved northbound on Highway 165 at around 60 mph just south of Mervel Avenue. CHP said Mendez came to a complete stop in the lane because of a dog in the roadway.
 
The motorcycle rider approached the Nissan from the rear. Then the front of the motorcycle crashed into the rear of the Nissan.
 
The impact ejected the rider from the motorcycle and he sustained major injuries. Emergency responders airlifted him to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto where doctors later pronounced him dead. His identity was not immediately available.
 
Mendez did not sustain any injuries in the incident.
 
CHP said intoxication did not play a role in the collision.
