6 Survive U.S. Navy Helicopter Accident at San Diego Bay

SAN DIEGO, CA (January 15, 2024) — Six people were rescued after a U.S. Navy helicopter crashed into the San Diego Bay Thursday night.

According to US Navy Commander Beth Teach, the helicopter crash occurred around 6:40 p.m. For an unknown reason, and MH-60R helicopter from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 41 crashed into the San Diego Bay during day-into-night search and rescue training.

Fortunately, a safety boat was nearby and all six crew members, including two pilots, survived the incident. Subsequently, officials took all crew members to undergo an evaluation that yielded neither critical nor life-threatening injuries.

Information surrounding what led to the accident was unavailable. However, the divers from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) THREE assessed the site and have yet to release information on the cause.

Safety precautions should always be practiced when performing training or drills. Have a Plan B ready in case something goes awry. Not everyone can avoid an accident, but a plan in place can minimize the dangers.
