Cable Car Suddenly Brakes to Avoid Vehicle at Washington and Taylor Streets Injuring 6 Passengers

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 11, 2023) – Six people were hospitalized in a cable car accident at Washington Street and Taylor Street in San Francisco on Monday afternoon.

The accident happened just after 1:00 p.m. on October 9. According to the San Francisco Fire Department, the cable car was coming down the hill on Washington Street and was almost to the base of the hill when the conductor noticed a passenger vehicle was in the intersection of Taylor Street.

The conductor had to use the emergency brake to avoid striking another vehicle. That caused the car to abruptly stop and the people on board to lunge forward.

Responding paramedics evaluated a total of 14 people at the scene. Six people were then taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

According to the Cable Car Museum, the emergency brake is one of three braking systems on the vehicle and is only used as a last resort. The brake consists of an 18-inch steel wedge hanging over the track slot.

Officials said the cable car was cleared shortly before 3:00 p.m.

To prevent cable car accidents, cable cars should undergo regular and thorough inspections before operating. Always follow safety precautions. Also, manage your risks by practicing all safety guidelines.
