2 Hurt in Oil Rig Accident on Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach

 
LONG BEACH, CA (February 29, 2024) — Two people were injured after an oil rig collapsed on Pacific Coast Highway near 2nd Street.
 
According to Long Beach Fire Department officials, the oil rig accident happened around 2:00 p.m. Monday. For an unknown reason, an oil derek gave way in a pumping unit area and dragged another material down on top of it. Subsequently, a worker, reportedly strapped inside a steel cage 50 feet above the pumping unit, fell during the incident. Soon after, Long Beach Fire paramedics arrived, freed him from the wreckage and rushed him into a hospital where he remains in stable condition.
 
Another worker reported minor injuries in the accident. Authorities did not say what caused the oil rig accident, but an investigation is ongoing.
