2 Hurt in Wrong-Way Collision on 5 Freeway near Carmel Valley Road
TORREY PINES, CA (November 13, 2024) — Two people were injured in a fiery wrong-way accident on the 5 Freeway near Carmel Valley Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the two-vehicle crash happened around 8:16 p.m. Monday. For unknown reasons, a driver in a white Toyota Prius was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of the I-5. Subsequently, the Toyota Prius crashed head-on with a gray Toyota RAV4.
Due to the accident, one of the two vehicles caught fire in the right-hand lane. Paramedics responded shortly thereafter and took the 38-year-old Carlsbad man driving the Prius and the 37-year-old Carlsbad man driving the RAV4 to a hospital with major injuries.
Police did not confirm if drugs or alcohol factored into the crash. However, they are looking into the details.
