2 Hurt, DUI Driver Strikes Police Vehicles During Traffic Stop on Highway 41 in Fresno
FRESNO, CA (May 16, 2023) — Two people were injured after a DUI driver hit two patrol cars during a traffic stop on Highway 41 near Shields Avenue.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the multi-vehicle accident happened around 12:15 a.m. Saturday.
It started when two Fresno Police officers made a traffic stop on northbound Highway 41. While one patrol car was on the shoulder, the second one pulled over on the right lane with a prisoner in the back seat. That second patrol vehicle, situated behind the suspect’s vehicle, had its emergency lights activated.
Minutes later, a driver of a Hyundai Santa Fe sideswiped the police vehicle on the shoulder before slamming into the second patrol vehicle in the right lane. Due to that last impact, the second patrol vehicle crashed into the suspect’s car.
During this accident, the prisoner in the backseat and one of the officers suffered minor injuries.
At some point after the accident, several other northbound drivers tried to avoid the crash but ended up colliding in a non-injurious fashion.
Following an investigation, police arrested the Hyundai driver on suspicion of DUI.
No other information about this incident was available. However, if anyone would like to add to this case, please call the CHP.
