2 People Hurt, Wrong-Way Collision on 580 Freeway in Oakland

OAKLAND, CA (April 24, 2023) — Two people were injured in a wrong-way accident on the 580 Freeway near Seminary Avenue.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the two-vehicle crash happened around 7:00 a.m. Sunday. For an unknown reason, a driver in a Ford F-150 was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the 580 Freeway.

CHP officers began receiving calls a little past 7:00 a.m. about a driver intentionally trying to hit cars head-on. The Ford F-150 eventually struck a Ford F-250 owned by the City of Oakland, prompting a Sigalert and lane closure.

Shortly after, paramedics arrived and took the F-150 driver to Highland Hospital for treatment of major injuries. Paramedics also brought the F-250 driver to the same hospital with minor injuries.

Traffic investigators did not say what caused the driver to deliberately hit other cars; however, an investigation into this case should confirm more details.

You can be one of the safest drivers out there and run into negligent motorists. Always keep your eyes out for danger. From loose debris on the road to speeding erratic drivers, hazards maximize the risks. Limit distractions and give yourself more space between cars.
