Speeding Driver Causes Crash on Maher Road in Monterey County Killing Teen Passenger

 
MONTEREY COUNTY, CA (February 7, 2024) – A 16-year-old boy was killed in a two-car accident on Maher Road in Monterey County Friday afternoon on February 2.
 
The fatal accident happened just after 4:30 p.m. near Tamara Lane. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 17-year-old Hollister boy was speeding south on Maher Road when his white Honda Accord crossed the double yellow lines.
 
At the same time, a 29-year-old Watsonville man was driving a Honda Fit northbound on Maher Road at approximately 30 mph.
 
The driver of the Accord failed to make a slight turn in the road and crashed into the Honda Fit.
 
The impact caused the Accord to roll over, ejecting both the driver and his passenger. Both were not wearing their seat belts.
 
The 16-year-old passenger suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was also a resident of Hollister.
 
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, which is under investigation.
