Afternoon Two-Car Accident on Highway 43 in Wasco Kills 1 Driver and Hurts Another

 
WASCO, CA (April 11, 2022) – Juan Antonio Fernandez died and Guillermo M. Valera was hurt in a two-car accident on Highway 43 north of Wasco on Thursday afternoon.
 
The accident happened just before 3:45 p.m. on April 7 at Pond Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, Fernandez was driving a Toyota Corolla westbound on Pond Road and stopped at the posted stop sign at the intersection.
 
Valera, a 57-year-old Hanford resident, was driving a Ford Expedition northbound on the highway.
 
Fernandez proceeded into the intersection in front of the Expedition. Valera tried to brake to avoid the Corolla but could not in time and hit the driver’s side of the Toyota at about 65 miles per hour.
 
After the crash, both vehicles ended up off the roadway and into a ditch.
 
Fernandez, a 65-year-old Wasco resident, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Valera sustained minor injuries.
 
Officials said alcohol and drugs were not contributing factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
