Mother Shannon Alvarez and Daughter Ashley Alvarez Die in Norwalk Multi-Car Crash, Police Release Brittany Lopez
NORWALK, CA (January 11, 2022) — A mother and her teen daughter died when a motorist suspected of driving through a red light slammed into their car on January 2.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, 50-year-old Shannon Alvarez and her 13-year-old daughter, Ashley Alvarez, were driving in their Chevrolet Camaro at the intersection of Foster Road and Studebaker Road around 10:40 a.m.
According to investigators, 26-year-old Brittany Lopez of Las Vegas was driving without a license when she allegedly sped past a red light and collided with two vehicles: the Alvarezs’ Chevy Camaro and one other car.
Both the mother and daughter died later that day after they were transported to the hospital. According to a GoFundMe, the two were inseparable.
Lopez and the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Police arrested Lopez in the wake of the crash. She was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license. In addition, investigators believe she may have been under the influence of either drugs or alcohol. As a result, officials are awaiting the results of toxicology reports.
Lopez has since been released after posting $50,000 bail. As of Sunday, prosecutors in Los Angeles County had not decided whether to pursue criminal charges against her, according to online court records.
