Berkeley Police Investigates Death of Man in Suspected Hit-and-Run Crash on Ashby Avenue

BERKELEY, CA (November 22, 2021) – A man was killed in a suspected hit-and-run crash on Ashby Avenue in Berkeley, Wednesday night.

Around 6:11 p.m. on November 17, officers responded to multiple calls of someone lying in the roadway near the train overcrossing, just west of Seventh Street. When they arrived, they found the man suffering from severe head and chest injuries.

The man died at the scene. Authorities only described him as someone in his 60s. They withheld his identity pending family notification.

Officers and firefighters searched the area after discovering the body. The CHP said they believe the person was hit by a car but details about a collision were not available.

The Berkeley Police Department is handling the investigation. They asked witnesses to call them at 510-981-5980.

The investigation prompted a lengthy closure of Ashby Avenue, a main thoroughfare in the city, in both directions.

We would like to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the victim.
