Metro Fire Engineer Kyle Rutherford Dies in 80 Freeway Crash in Roseville

 
ROSEVILLE, CA (March 23, 2021) – The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said a fire engineer died in a car accident Saturday, March 20, in Roseville.
 
According to the CHP, 38-year-old Kyle Rutherford was reporting for duty at his station in North Highlands. He was traveling in the left traffic lanes when for unknown reasons, he crashed into a center divider on 80 Freeway near Atlantic Street.
 
As a result, Rutherford suffered fatal injuries and died at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. He was the sole occupant of his car.
 
Rutherford was hired by Metro Fire in March 2015 and was promoted to fire engineer in 2018, following in the footsteps of his retired father, the District said.
 
At this time, it is unclear if speed, drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. Further investigation is underway.
