Speeding Wrong-Way Driver and 16-Year-Old Driver Die after Fiery Crash on 5 Freeway in Chula Vista

 
CHULA VISTA, CA (April 11, 2024) – A teen driver and a 67-year-old woman were killed in a fiery wrong-way accident on 5 Freeway in Chula Vista early Wednesday morning on April 10.
 
The fatal accident happened around 3:00 a.m. near Camino de la Plaza. According to the California Highway Patrol, the woman from San Diego was driving a Honda Civic the wrong way at a high rate of speed when she collided head-on into a Dodge Challenger, driven by a 16-year-old teen from Imperial Beach.
 
As a result of the crash, the Dodge caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames.
 
Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and died at the scene.
 
A toxicology report is pending from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Officer to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
