SAN LEANDRO, CA (June 14, 2023) – Two carjacking suspects died after a fiery crash near Davis Street and Preda Street in San Leandro early Monday morning on June 12.

The incident started Sunday night when a woman was shot outside a strip mall on the 1300 block of West Yosemite Avenue in Manteca.

First responders found the woman who had stumbled into one of the businesses for help. They tried saving her but she died at the scene.

Authorities identified the victim as Ashley Waters, who was reportedly picking up her boyfriend at the time of the shooting.

On Monday around 1:45 a.m., deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office came across a reportedly stolen 2007 gray Toyota Camry in a carjacking in Oakland. Deputies put on their lights and sirens, but the driver kept going.

While going west on Davis Street in San Leadro, the driver lost control of the Camry and slammed into a tree head-on near Preda Street.

The Camry caught fire after the crash. The two male suspects became trapped in the car and died at the scene.

A third occupant, a 14-year-old girl in the back seat, needed rescuing after her foot became trapped in the wreckage. Deputies freed her and took her to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators later recovered a handgun from the front seat of the charred vehicle.
