Single-Vehicle Accident in Gaviota Claims Boy’s Life, Critically Injures 2 Others

 
GAVIOTA, CA (November 3, 2022) — A six-year-old boy died in a car crash on Highway 101 near Gaviota Tuesday night.
 
According to the authorities, the incident occurred at about 7:40 p.m. in the northbound lanes, just north of the tunnel.
 
Initial findings showed that 31-year-old Javier Gonzalez of Santa Maria was driving a 2003 Nissan Frontier when he lost control of the vehicle. The Nissan slid out of control and then landed on its side. It reportedly went 25 to 30 feet off the roadway before ending up on boulders in the creek between the northbound and southbound lanes.
 
At the time of the crash, Javier was traveling with 31-year-old Sonia Gonzalez of Santa Maria, a six-year-old boy, and a two-year-old boy. The three passengers were taken to Santa Ynez Cottage Hospital. The six-year-old boy later died in the hospital. Sonia suffered major injuries, while the two-year-old boy had critical internal injuries.
 
The CHP said it was raining at the time of the crash and alcohol and drugs did not seem to be factors. However, the crash remains under investigation. If anyone has information, please contact Officer Chapman of the CHP’s Buellton area office at 805-688-5551.
