Backhoe Lands on Car on National Trails Highway in Oro Grande Killing One Person and Critically Injuring Another

 
ORO GRANDE, CA (July 19, 2023) – A man died and a woman was airlifted after a traffic accident on National Trails Highway in Oro Grande Tuesday morning on July 18.
 
The fatal accident happened around 7:15 a.m. underneath the railroad bridge, near the entrance to Cal Portland. According to the California Highway Patrol, a semi truck with a backhoe on a trailer struck the railroad bridge, causing the backhoe to fall off and land on a nearby Ford.
 
After the crash, the partially crushed Ford continued south on National Trails Highway until it crashed into a tree located near an apartment complex.
 
Victorville firefighters responded and found the man dead inside the car.
 
The woman inside the car sustained injuries to her arm and back. She was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

County personnel were requested to inspect the roadway for gouges. BNSF officials were also asked to check the bridge for damages.

An investigation is underway.
