Driver Dies after Crashing His Car while Trying to Avoid Disabled Vehicle on 880 Freeway in Hayward

 
HAYWARD, CA (August 8, 2023) – A man was killed in a car accident on 880 Freeway in Hayward Monday evening on August 7.
 
The fatal accident happened around 9:21 p.m. in the northbound lanes of 880 Freeway, just south of Whipple Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, a Honda CR-V sustained a flat tire and began making its way to the right shoulder of the freeway.
 
Meanwhile, the victim was driving a 2009 Dodge Charger behind the Honda at a high rate of speed. He tried to avoid the disabled Honda when he lost control and struck the wall on the right shoulder.
 
The Charger then traveled across all lanes and crashed into the concrete center divider.
 
As a result, the man driving the Charger suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was a 27-year-old Newark resident. He was the only occupant in the car and was not wearing a seat belt.
 
The occupants of the Honda were not injured. They remained on scene and provided statements to investigators.
 
Alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
