20-Year-Old Man Dies after Head-On Crash with Box Truck in Merced County

 
MERCED COUNTY, CA (January 4, 2024) – Joseph Gonzalez was killed in a head-on accident in Merced County on December 26.
 
The fatal accident happened around 10:47 a.m. on Highway 59 at Rahilly Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, Gonzalez was driving a 2019 Jeep SUV southbound when for unknown reasons, the Jeep veered to the left directly in the path of a 2020 Freightliner box truck traveling northbound on Highway 59 at about 50 mph. The vehicles collided head-on in the northbound lane of the highway.
 
Gonzalez suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was a 20-year-old Fresno resident, according to the Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office.
 
The driver of the box truck, a 54-year-old Fresno man, did not sustain any injuries. He was also determined to not be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol and assisted investigating officers.
 
An investigation is ongoing.
