Man Riding Horse Dies after Struck by Pickup Truck in Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, CA (March 18, 2024) – Jose Gelacio Mondragon Hernandez was hit and killed by a vehicle while he was riding a horse in southeast Bakersfield late Saturday evening.
The fatal crash happened around 11:35 p.m. on March 16, near the intersection of Alto Place and South Sterling Road. According to the Bakersfield Police Department, a man was driving a pickup truck in the 1300 block of South Sterling Road when he struck Hernandez on horseback, also traveling in the southbound lanes.
When officers arrived, they found Hernandez in the roadway with fatal injuries. They pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified Hernandez as a 46-year-old Bakersfield resident.
Meanwhile, the horse suffered major injuries.
Based on the extent of injuries to the animal, officers determined the most humane course of action was to euthanize the horse at the scene.
The driver of the truck remained on scene and cooperated with police.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, which is under investigation.
