56-Year-Old Man Dies after Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver in El Cajon

 
EL CAJON, CA (January 2, 2022) – John Carthel Eugene Gabbard died in a hit-and-run crash in El Cajon Tuesday morning.
 
The accident happened around 5:55 a.m. on December 28, in the area of Sandalwood Drive and Ballantyne Street. Police said Gabbard was attempting to cross the roadway when a vehicle struck him.
 
As a result, Gabbard suffered major head trauma. Responding paramedics rushed him to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he died at 11:45 a.m.
 
Gabbard was 56 years old, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
 
Investigators believe a dark colored truck struck Gabbard as it headed south toward the 8 Freeway bridge. The truck and its driver were not at the scene when police arrived.
