Joey Keck Detained, Joe Puga Killed in Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crash in El Centro

 
EL CENTRO, CA (May 19, 2022) — Joe Puga died in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident on Ross Avenue near 23rd Street on Monday night.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal hit-and-run happened around 7:10 p.m. Under unclear circumstances, a driver operating a gray Nissan Rogue struck 89-year-old Puga.
 
Police stated Puga had just stepped off the curb while delivering produce to his neighbors and family when he was hit.
 
Subsequently, the driver, later identified as Joey Wayne Keck, left the scene and turned north on Lotus Avenue.
 
Around 1:00 a.m., CHP officers located an abandoned Nissan Rogue in a ditch on West Main Road with damage consistent with that of the crash.
 
From there, officers were able to arrest 25-year-old Keck on suspicion of hit-and-run driving resulting in death. Although, by 10:00 a.m. police released him from custody.
 
Despite having received life-saving efforts at El Centro Regional Medical Center, the family man and retired farmer succumbed to his injuries at 8:31 p.m.
 
At this time, information on the crash requires further investigation. Although, any witnesses with details should contact the CHP.
