Hit-and-Run Driver of Stolen Car Hits SUV in Oakland Killing Couple Heading to Church
OAKLAND, CA (October 6, 2023) – Derrick Shaw and Vera Hampton were killed in a hit-and-run crash in Oakland Sunday morning last month on September 24.
According to the Oakland Police Department, Shaw and his fiancée were heading to a church in a white SUV. They were traveling along 73rd Avenue and turned onto Holly Street, when a driver of a stolen black sedan smashed into their car at high speed.
The impact caused the SUV to roll over into a parked vehicle.
The driver of the stolen car, a 25-year-old Richmond man, fled the scene on foot.
Shaw, 64, and his fiancée Hampton, 67, both died at the scene.
A third passenger riding in the back of the SUV suffered severe injuries.
Police later found and arrested the hit-and-run suspect.
Shaw’s family has set up a GoFundMe to help pay for the burial. As of this report, it’s raised more than $1,300.
