Eric Mays Rear-Ends Daniel Hernandez on Washington Road near Taylor Road

KEYES, CA (May 3, 2021) — A Gustine man was killed Monday afternoon, April 12 when he ejected from his all-terrain vehicle after being hit by a truck in a collision near Keyes.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened around 1:20 p.m. on Washington Road, just north of Taylor Road.

Police identified the man as 50-year-old Daniel Hernandez of Gustine.

Hernandez was driving a 2012 Kubota ATV southbound on Washington Road. After that, his ATV was rear-ended by a 2019 Dodge Ram driven by 30-year-old Eric Mays of Turlock.

Hernandez was not wearing a safety belt. As a result, the force of the impact ejected him off the vehicle and onto the road. Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mays sustained minor injuries to his chest, but declined medical treatment at the scene.

The CHP is still investigating the collision. They have not yet determined if Hernandez had just pulled out onto the road just prior to the collision.
