Married Couple on Bicycles Dies after Struck by Lumber Hanging Off Truck in Napa County

 
NAPA COUNTY, CA (October 19, 2023) – Christian Deaton and Michelle Deaton died in a bicycle accident in Napa County Tuesday morning on October 17.
 
The fatal accident happened around 11:00 a.m. in the 5300 block of the Silverado Trail. According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, Christian was riding a Trek bike and Michelle was on a Specialized riding in the northbound bike lane of the Silverado Trail.
 
A cargo of lumber shifted on a northbound flatbed truck. The wood protruded to the right of the truck and struck the cyclists, causing a crash. The truck owned by Foster Lumber Yards, was driven by 55-year-old Porfirio Sanchez of Vallejo.
 
Christian died at the scene. Paramedics rushed Michelle to Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center, where she also died.

The two victims were married couple from Portland, Oregon. Christian was 52 and Michelle was 48, according to the Napa County Coroner’s Office. They were visiting the Napa Valley.

Sanchez stopped his truck after the crash. He was unharmed.

It is still unknown whether speed, alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
