22-Year-Old Man Dies after Early Morning Head-On Crash in Mendota
MENDOTA, CA (October 4, 2022) – Benedo Alfaro Vasquez was killed in a DUI head-on crash on Highway 33 in Mendota early Monday morning, October 3.
The accident happened just before 3:00 a.m. at Bass Avenue. According to California Highway Patrol, 27-year-old Gilbert S. Castro of Mendota was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox south on Highway 33 when he allowed the SUV to drift into the northbound lanes. He then collided head-on with a 2009 Toyota Corolla, driven by Vasquez.
As a result, 22-year-old Mendota resident Vasquez suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, according to the Fresno County Coroner’s Office.
Castro sustained moderate injuries. His car had major damage.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
Officers determined Castro showed signs of intoxication and arrested him on suspicion of DUI.
Further investigation is underway.
