17-Year-Old Passenger Dies after Car Overturns on Highway 178 near Beale Avenue
BAKERSFIELD, CA (July 15, 2021) – Alejandro Diaz Martinez died in a rollover accident Sunday evening on Highway 178 in Bakersfield.
The accident happened around 9:46 p.m. on July 11, near the Beale Avenue off-ramp. According to the CHP, the victim was a passenger in a Hyundai. The car was exiting the highway through the Beale Avenue off-ramp when the driver made an unsafe turn to avoid an object in the roadway and lost control.
The car then struck a raised asphalt curb and overturned on its roof, ejecting Martinez. He was unrestrained.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office said Martinez suffered serious injuries from the crash and later died at Kern Medical Center. He was a 17-year-old Bakersfield resident.
Meanwhile, the 22-year-old driver had minor injuries and declined medical treatment.
At this time, CHP officials are still trying to determine whether speed, drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
