9 Firefighters Hurt in Natural Gas Truck Explosion on Alameda Street in Port of Los Angeles

PORT OF LOS ANGELES, CA (February 16, 2024) — Nine firefighters were injured after a natural gas truck exploded on Alameda Street near Henry Ford Avenue.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the fire explosion happened around 7:00 a.m. Thursday. For an unknown reason, a natural gas truck caught on fire in the 1100 block of North Alameda Street. Per reports, the semi-truck was running on two 100-gallon tanks loaded with compressed natural gas instead of diesel fuel.

Soon after receiving the report, the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived to put out the flames. However, one tank exploded due to pressurized cylinders about six minutes after their arrival.

As a result, nine firefighters, including two who suffered critical injuries and burns, were harmed in the incident. Not long after the explosion, a hazardous material specialist team responded to monitor the air.

At this time, fire officials do not know what caused the semi-truck fire before the explosion. However, authorities will investigate this case further.
